July 1, 1863 was the day the Battle of Gettysburg began. It lasted three days. It had the highest number of casualties of any Civil War battle, numbering over 50,000 dead. General Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy lost the battle and dashed Confederate hopes that the war could be won by invading the North.
